Welcome to Castlebar.

Castlebar, the county town of Mayo, sits right in the heart of the west of Ireland — which makes it a brilliant base for a day out, a weekend away, or a longer break. Whether you're visiting with kids, planning a team day with colleagues, organising a birthday, or just looking for something fun to do with friends, there's plenty packed into the town and the countryside around it. Here are some of our favourite things to do in and around Castlebar.

1. Escape the everyday at INSiDE Escape Rooms

Top of our list (we might be a little biased!) is INSiDE, right here in Castlebar. You and your group get a private, movie-themed escape room all to yourselves and 60 minutes to hunt down the clues, crack the codes and make your escape. Games are built for 2–10 players and are suitable for ages 8 and up — and kids 6 and under go free with two paying adults — which makes it a fantastic fit for almost any occasion:

  • Families looking for something a bit different on a day out or over the school holidays

  • Birthday parties — brilliant for kids, teens and grown-ups alike

  • Friends who fancy a fun, slightly competitive challenge

  • Corporate groups and teams wanting hands-on team-building that actually gets everyone talking and working together

A gamemaster is on hand to nudge you with hints if you get stuck, and you'll get a group photo at the end to celebrate your (hopefully successful!) escape. Best of all, it's indoors — so it's the perfect plan whatever the Mayo weather decides to do. You'll find us at Moneen Industrial Estate in Castlebar, and it's well worth booking ahead, as every game is private and slots fill up quickly.

2. National Museum of Ireland – Country Life, Turlough Park

Just a few minutes from the town centre, this is one of Mayo's standout attractions — and admission is completely free. Set in the lovely grounds of Turlough Park, with a beautifully restored period house and gardens, the museum tells the story of everyday Irish life from the mid-1800s to the mid-1900s through wonderfully put-together exhibitions. It's family-friendly, ideal for a rainy day, and the grounds are gorgeous for a wander when the sun decides to appear. (It's closed on Mondays, so it's worth checking current opening times before you travel.)

3. Lough Lannagh and the Great Western Greenway

For fresh air and a bit of exercise, Lough Lannagh on the edge of town has gentle lakeside walking and cycling trails, and you can even try stand-up paddleboarding or canoeing on the water with local activity providers. From here you can join the greenway linking Castlebar and Turlough Park, part of the wider Great Western Greenway — a mostly traffic-free walking and cycling route that runs all the way from Westport out to Achill Island. Bring your own bikes or hire them locally, and go as far as the legs will carry you.

4. Make a weekend of it at Mayo Glamping

If you want to turn a day out into a proper getaway, Mayo Glamping, just outside Castlebar, is something genuinely special. You can stay in handcrafted A-frame cabins, fairy huts, or even round-doored hobbit huts, with cosy beds, a hot tub, a sauna, and a shared kitchen and communal space to gather in. It's a magical base for families and groups, sits close to the museum and the greenway, and is only a short hop from town — so you could easily round off an evening's escape-room session with a night under the stars. 5. Venture a little further: Westport, Croagh Patrick and Knock

Castlebar's central spot means some of Mayo's biggest names are only a short drive away. Westport House and its grounds on Clew Bay are a long-standing family favourite; the holy mountain of Croagh Patrick rewards climbers with breathtaking views over the bay; and Knock Shrine, an internationally known pilgrimage site, is around half an hour away. All three make easy and memorable day trips.

Round off the day in town

Back in Castlebar itself, there's a genuinely good food and culture scene to enjoy — award-winning cafés and delis (Rua is a real local institution), a chocolate shop run by a world-class chocolatier, and the Linenhall Arts Centre and Royal Theatre for live music, shows and exhibitions. And if the weather turns, Mayo Leisure Point in Moneen has bowling and pool to keep the whole group entertained.

Start your Castlebar adventure with us

However you choose to spend your time in Castlebar, we'd love to be part of it. An hour locked inside one of our movie-themed rooms is the kind of experience people talk about long afterwards — so gather your family, friends or team, pick your game, and see if you've got what it takes to escape.
